Elmira: Age 93, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022. Deacon Bill was born in Wellsville NY, raised in Andover NY, a son of Anthony and Florence (Daniher) Dougherty. His wife Mary McCarthy Dougherty predeceased him on July 27, 2020. Surviving are his children, Ellen, Michael (Arleen), Timothy; grandson Lucas; and great-granddaughter Emberly. During the Korean War Deacon Bill served in the US Army Military Intelligence. He earned both his Bachelor and Master's Degrees at Alfred University. Deacon Bill worked for the Elmira Heights School District for thirty-seven years, retiring as the Superintendent of Schools. He was ordained to permanent Deacon to St. Charles Borromeo Church, later to St. Casimir Church. He also served various community ministries: Elmira College, Elmira Heights Police Department, and Elmira Heights Rotary Club. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Deacon Bill on Thursday, April 21, 2022, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary Our Mother Church, 816 Broad Street, Horseheads. Interment, with committal prayers, and military honors will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Deacon Bill with a donation to The Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue, Elmira Heights NY 14903, or to a charity of one's choice.
