Obituary of Arthur L. DeVore

Age 75, passed away at home with his loving family by his side on Friday, March 24, 2017. Art was born in Elmira a son of the late Olga (Sbedico) DeVore and Roland C. DeVore, Sr. In addition to his mother and father, he was also predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Roland C., Jr. and Eleanor DeVore; brother-in-law Ronald Payne; great-granddaughter Addison Claire Decker; his "old buddy" and uncle William Richards; uncle Julius Spedico. Art is survived by his loving companion of 40 years Donna O'Toole DeVore; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Mark Fanelli of Elmira with daughters, Molly (Terrence) Decker and Caitlin (Jason Krusen) Eagen; Paige and Dan Sandore of Davenport FL, with children, Cortney (Stephen) Matteson, Taylor (Phil Graves) Sandore, and Adam (Christina Farrell) Sandore; Dana and Jose Velez of St. Augustine FL; son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Nicki O'Toole of Waverly NY with children, Patrick, Isabella, Kevin Michael, and Dylan O'Toole; sister Marilyn Payne of San Jose CA; aunt Gloria Richards of Pine City; mother-in-law Cora Amentler of Chemung; nieces, Renee Kokkoris, Laura Serafino; nephew Roland DeVore III; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and Sandy Amentler, Anthony Amentler, and William Tice all of Elmira; several cousins; and an extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; faithful canine companion Cisco III who never left Art's side. Art was excited about the pending birth of a great-granddaughter in May. He is also survived by special friends, Bob Kelley, Joe Szerszen, Jack Saginario, Jay Palmer, George Snell, Dick Peterson, Jerry Potson, along will a host of other friends too numerous to list. Art was a graduate of Southside High School, Class of 1960. After school he enlisted for four years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Art worked for New York State Corrections for a short time before joining the New York State Police on May 6, 1968. He had a nearly thirty year career as a Trooper working most of that time with Troop E, retiring on October 19, 1994. Art was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He had a lifelong love of baseball. Art has been to every Major League ballpark, many with his old buddy Bill and other friends. He was a long time member of the Downtown Athletic Club. After a workout at the club Art and others could be found at Lights Bakery solving the problems of the world. Art's greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. At Art's request there will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Elmira on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, 11:00 a.m. Committal prayers and military honors will follow at Woodlawn National Cemetery. The family will provide flowers. Those wishing may remember Art, and honor his grandsons, Patrick and Dylan, with a donation to either the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, 2450 Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis MN 55454 or the Ronald McDonald House of Minnesota, 818 Fulton Street SE, Minneapolis MN 55414.
