Obituary of Rosanna S. Smith

Age 96, a lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Rosanna was a daughter of Wickham and Rosa Cotton Smith. She was predeceased by her brother Samuel Smith and other family members John and Ann Casey. Rosanna is survived by her cousins Jane Ann Casey of Cooperstown NY; George Casey of Greenwich NY with his wife Dorothea and their son Michael; Dana Wagemaker-Casey of Niskayuna NY with her children Emily, Andrew, Sarah and Catharine; George and Jeanne Osborn of Florida; longtime good friends Mary Ellen and Dean Morgan and family of Keuka Lake. Rosanna was a 1941 graduate of Elmira College with a BA in Biology and Chemistry. She is a retired medical technologist having worked for various doctors in the Elmira area. For most of her adult life Rosanna was active with the Elmira College alumni. In April of 2004 she was awarded the Elmira College President's Council Award honoring her contributions to the quality of life in the greater Elmira Area. Her involvement with the Elmira community went far beyond Elmira College. In earlier years she had been a volunteer at the EFA Library, City of Elmira 5th District Council, Past President of Senior Notebook Production Team and the Chemung County Historical Society. She had also been President of the Elmira Business and Professional Women, having received their "Women of the Year" award in 1984. She was a 69 year member of the Southern Finger Lakes Women Chapter of NYSWI. Rosanna had been active on many local boards and committees which included Gold Card Board of Directors where she had served as Secretary and Vice President, the Over The Counter Players, RSVP, Chemung County Community Ambassador Council, TRIAD Advisory Board, Brand Park Restoration Committee, Senor Notebook Production Team, a charter member of the BPO Does #181, and a still found time to sell daffodils for the American Cancer Society. She had been a long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St. Elmira, on Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016, 10:00 a.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 N. Main Street, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Rosanna with a donation to either, Trinity Episcopal Church, Elmira College or the Chemung County Historical Society. Rosanna's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the 6th floor staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care provided to Rosanna for the last 3 plus years.
