"Kate"
Elmira Heights: Age 71, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, November 17, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital SNF, with her family by her side. Kate was born December 15, 1940, in Elmira, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Dorothy (Jones) Kane. In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her husbands, Edward D. Monahan and Charles R. Page, son Michael Monahan, and mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law, Edward A. and Catherine Monahan, Raymond and Sophie Page. Kate was a 1958 graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School. She went on to St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1961. Kate's life was a life of service to others. Her nursing career was one of fulfillment when she found her calling in helping patients, and their families, with end of life care, touching many, many lives over her 20 years working for Southern Tier Hospice. Kate even traveled to Russia and Africa to deliver much needed supplies and to offer training in hospice care. With her husband Ed she had 3 boys, 2 of whom survive her, Dennis Monahan with wife April Fearnley, Vienna VA and Terrence Monahan, Elmira. With her husband Charlie she became a step mom to Todd Page, Montgomery NY and Cathleen Page, Ellenville NY. Kate is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew and Shelby; siblings, Patricia K. Shields, Elmira, John T. (Ellie) Kane, Miami FL, Mary Ellen (Norm) Guthrie, Lakeland FL, Joseph (MaryAnne) Kane, Waverly; mother-in-law Pauline Sharp, Mansfield PA; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Over the years Kate was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Arctic League and St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed winter months in Florida with Charlie and trips to Italy and Ireland. Kate was a long time communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Interment, with committal prayers, will then take place at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a worthy charity of your choice in Kate's memory. St. Joseph's Nursing School alumni will form an honor guard at St. Charles Borromeo Church at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday. A special thank you to Karen and Bob Kurcoba for all their love and support for Kate, and to St. Joe's 3rd Floor Skilled Care for the exceptional care provided to Kate.
