Mary Louise Sozanski
Age 83, of Elmira, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital SNF. Mary Lou was born in Elmira on October 8, 1926, a daughter of John E. and Clara Fletcher Murphy. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Steven J. Sozanski; brother John Murphy; sisters-in-law, Barbara Sozanski and Eleanor Sozanski. Mary Lou is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eileen M. and Joseph Bumbalo of Penn Yan with their daughters, Julie (Patrick) Hobbs, Lisa (Josh) Wright, Lori (Byron) Lindsted and Heather Carbone; son, Dr. Michael S. Sozanski of Berkley CA with his daughters, Christine and Jeanette Sozanski; daughter and son-in-law, Mary C. and Steven Evans of Elmira with their daughters, Jennifer, Caitlin and Stefanie Evans; brother and sister-in-law, James and Patricia Murphy of Kansas; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Dominic Cirillo of Niagara Falls NY; brothers-in-law, Walter Sozanski and Myron Sozanski both of Big Flats. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Mary Lou was a 1947 graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. During her nursing career she worked for Dr. Robert Huddle Sr., Southern Tier Pediatrics and St. Joseph's Hospital, from where she retired at the age of 72. Even in retirement she remained active working as a school nurse for BOCES at the Bush Campus. Mary Lou cherished the time she would spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Casimir's Church at 9:30 a.m. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Woodlawn National Cemetery. The Sozanski Family extends their sincere thanks to the 5th Floor Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit for the wonderful care given their mother.
Members of St. Joseph's School of Nursing Alumni will meet Wednesday, May 12th at St. Casimir's Church at 9:00 a.m. to form an honor guard for Mary Lou.
