Ann grew up in Elmira, NY from the age of three. She attended St. Anthony’s Grammer School and Elmira Catholic High. She decided to work a year before continuing her education where she met and married her former husband, Robert A. Hughes, the father of her five children. Eventually she went to work at a security company where she met her husband, Daryl, the love of her life. They had a wonderful marriage of 44 years until his passing in 2022. They created a home and invested in it a love for each other and their children. Everything they did, they did together. When the children were grown, they moved to Fairfax VA to be close to Ann’s sister Pat and her family. She was employed by the Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, IAFF Local 2068. As an office manager she loved her position and the everyday challenges it presented. Most of all she loved the people that she met and her interaction with its many members and their families. Ann retired in 2013, and she and her husband moved back to Elmira to be close to family. Ann was an avid reader. She did not like reading books online, but instead enjoyed the experience of reading a real book. She loved all music and enjoyed sports, especially Yankee baseball, college basketball, golf, and bowling. Ann enjoyed board and card games, especially Scrabble, Canasta, Euchre, Gin Rummy, and Pinochle. Ann’s devotion to her family was immeasurable and unconditional. She was kind to all and her never ending faith in God carried over to every facet of her life. We will miss you - mom, grandma, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, friend – and will see you again.
The family would like to thank CareFirst, Chemung County Sheriff’s Department and EMTs for the kindness and sensitivity they showed at the end of Ann’s life.
