To the Delaney Family:
I made a great friend in Lawrenceburg, IN in 1981……that was Paul. He helped me get started in my career…..we became very close and stayed in touch for many years. We connected on the phone a few times the last two years…..had some good laughs and memories as we reminisced about the days in the BURG and then again back in Elmira.
Cheers to a great guy and love and prayers to his family as Paul enjoys his entrance to God’s Kingdom….THE BEST PLACE!

Every sentence out of Paul’s mouth was a joke. Said with a straight face in a dry tone, volume barely above a mumble, came an apt observation of a scene or a quick remark that could make the most cynical laugh. It took me a bit of time with Paul, spent after I began dating his son Emmett, to recognize this fact. Paul would speak and a few seconds later I would realize he’d made a hilarious quip - a sense of humor I see reflected in Emmett every day. Emmett and I began dating just before the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant that it was several years before I could spend any meaningful time with Paul in person. What preceded that time were countless FaceTimes on holidays, countless texts from Paul on May 4 telling me to “let the fourth be with me,” and countless phone calls between Emmett and Paul, lasting hours, both screaming to be heard by each other in between bursts of laughter. The statement “to know Paul is to love Paul” couldn’t be more fitting. A gentle soul, a warm presence, a steady and humble nature: Paul was all of these things. What I saw most firsthand was the incredible father and husband Paul was to his children and wife, Micki. Paul saw Emmett as a lawyer long before Emmett began studying for the LSAT. He guided Emmett through 1L year through daily conversations and words of encouragement. He supported Emmett taking the Bar exam from the hospital. I will always cherish the time I got to spend with Paul at Emmett’s graduation, at Legal Seafoods in Chestnut Hill when he and Micki came to Boston to visit and help us move into our first apartment together, with my parents and sisters who I am so grateful Paul got the chance to meet, in the hospital making jokes and playing games in his final days. (Only Paul would order “apple juice, over ice, seven cubes” from his hospital bed). Most of all, I will cherish the incredible person in Emmett that Paul brought into my life. Emmett carries so much of Paul in him: a spirit I know will continue to be passed on. “God bless you honey” were the last words I heard from Paul. God bless you, Paul, and thanks for everything.

Paul DeLaney was the epitome of a family man. I met Paul in 2014 on my third date with his daughter Elyse. Meeting your girlfriend’s (now wife’s) family for the first time can be stressful and intimidating for a lot of people but Paul DeLaney made it the easiest thing in the world. It is so rare to find a person that greets everyone with open arms, a warm smile, and an offer of friendship. Even more rare is that it was so natural for Paul. There was never any judgement in Paul’s heart. I married into the most wonderful family and that all came from Paul and his dedication, devotion, and love that he held for Micki, Elyse, Emmett, and Kienan. There was nothing that he wouldn’t for his family. To be included and loved by him as part of his family is a blessing that I will cherish forever. I consider myself to be unbelievably lucky and fortunate to have spent so much time with Paul over the last 10 years. To see and hear all of the memories of him from before I knew him make me so happy that I had the time with him that I did. Whether it was joking around, discussing baseball and fantasy football, watching MASH, talking about his kids, or sitting in comfortable silence Paul provided the warmth and love that made a house a home and me a part of it. Even without saying a word Paul changed any room that he was in. The underlying strength and love he emanated made any room he was in more comforting and alive. Thank you Paul. Thank you for giving me permission to marry Elyse (his response was “are you sure?”). Thank you for the amazing family you accepted me into. Thank you for the long afternoons of companionship. Thank you for holding on long enough to let us say goodbye. Thank you for being you. Words cannot describe how much you will be missed. To know Paul is to love Paul. I am so grateful to have had him in my life. Although our time was short together I know we made the most of it. I love you Paul.

"The Love of Paul" will live on is so, so many. Paul loved his family, friends, and his dog. Paul especially loved his wife Micki, their children, Brandon, Elyse, her husband Sam, Emmett, Audrey, and Kienan, which was evident in the many conversations we shared. Paul always answered his phone, and if he could not talk, he'd call you right back. As his sister, and being a Nurse, we'd talk about health and wellness, especially his heart condition. Paul in his special way would let me know, no matter the condition of my heart, Molly, "my heart ticks for my wife and children" what we loved about him. Growing up with Paul on Franklin Street holds many fun memories. he loved sweets, hated vegetables, ran the Sunday morning paper stand, drove without a license, liked beer, had lots of friends, mostly he was a sports enthusiast, he especially loved golf, he was an excellent golfer. Reflected in his achievements, Paul knew how to take care of himself, not only what he wanted, but what he needed to fulfill his happiness. He was very intelligent and had a wonderful wit and sense of humor. Whether it be a TV station he wanted to watch or sharing the family car Paul made his wish come true. I never heard him say a bad thing about anyone. The statement Paul "knew no strangers" defines him well. Paul befriended everyone, he was a gentle giant, everyone LOVED Paul. What we will now miss is how he'd show up unannounced, or on short notice, we'd always figure something out, we will miss that about him. We grew up with kind, loving parents who set the example of a strong Christian Faith and to "do what is right" Paul was a faithful leader, he was called home early, so many will miss him. Paul, I know you are near, and I will lean on you spiritually. You are the first to pass leading the way for all of us, such a good brother. Rest in peace Paul, I miss you! Love Your Sister Molly
