Obituary of Evelyn E. DeLoria
Evelyn Elaine DeLoria, age 95, passed away April 7, 2024, in Horseheads, NY. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul Leo DeLoria (1927-2015).
Evelyn was born in Potsdam, NY, to Justine Benton and Royal Thompson. She is survived by her grateful children Kathie (Jackson) of Seal Beach, CA, and Christopher (Marlene) of Horseheads, NY, as well as her sister, Sally Prashaw of Winthrop, NY. “Manny” will be missed by her cherished grandchildren Mindy, Chris (Sydney), and Jake (Stephany) and her 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She is also survived by many special cousins from Potsdam, especially Olga Thomas (101).
Evelyn and Paul started their charmed married life in Lake Placid, NY, New Year's Eve 1948. With a career with the New York Telephone Company, they lived in six cities, finally ending up in Camillus, NY, for 45 years. Evelyn was home with the kids, but also worked as a reading specialist in a middle school.
Many joyous years were spent vacationing in the Adirondacks with the Weeks family and their “adopted” daughter, Cheryl, at the family cottage at Grippen Lake, Ontario, and at the beach condo in Manasota Key, FL. Their active lives were spent swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, bowling, golfing, playing cards, and especially birding. In their retirement, they traveled extensively in the U.S. and Canada. Evelyn was famous for her world-renowned apple pie and other delights from her kitchen. Their daily 4:30 honored tradition of “Sock It To Me Time” lives on.
They are the parents that all kids hope to have. They are the couple that all partners hope to be. And they are the pillars of support and sweet love that every family wishes it had.
Evelyn will join Paul at Woodlawn National Cemetery April 12, 2024. Those wishing to remember Evelyn and Paul may make a donation to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology through www.birds.cornell.edu.
