Stephen was predeceased by parents Joseph and Mary Jane Chely; brother Michael Chely; sister Jeanne Chely Zimar; cousin Mary Chely; grandson Josiah Chely; and longtime feline companion Ziggy.
Stephen is survived by his children and grandchildren who were the light and joy of his life. Christina (Dan) Oldroyd and their children Kendra and Harrison (and Harrison's father Michael Roberts), Nick (Ashley) Chely and their children Gionni and Aniciya (and Aniciya's mother Desireé Murphy), Jason (Brianna) Chely and their children Graycelyn and Leola. Stephen is also survived by his former wife and friend, Cheryl Guild, and former brother-in-law and friend, Wayne Talley. Stephen was born and raised in Elmira, NY. A graduate of Notre Dame High School, he went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Poetry from St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT.
After college, he lived in San Francisco, CA, where he met his former wife, Cheryl. Stephen and Cheryl moved to Stephen's childhood home, Elmira, NY, where he worked for Hardinge, Inc. for over 30 years.
Along with his love for his children and family, Stephen had a passion for music, writing, and poetry. He also loved to cook and had many specialties. His most cherished moments were on Keuka Lake and Anna Maria Island, FL, two special places that he loved sharing with his children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew Stephen would agree his most endearing quality was his quick wit and humor.
Stephen was passionate about equality and dreamed of a world where everyone could live their truth and be their authentic selves. With this in mind, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Human Rights Campaign.
Family and friends are welcome to join in celebrating Stephen’s life at the Elmira Country Club, 1358 West Church Street, Elmira, on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 1pm - 3pm.
