Obituary of Rosalee Chalk Mandell
Elmira: Age 85, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023 at the Guthrie-Corning Hospital. Rosalee was born and raised in Elmira, a daughter of Peter and Catherine (Guild) Chalk. She is predeceased by husband Daniel J. Mandell, Sr., sister-in-law and brother-in-law Teresa A. and Charles Jung, and brother-in-law Richard Mandell. Rosalee is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Daniel J., Jr. and Sherry Mandell of Elmira, with their daughter April (Joseph) Falchek; daughter and son-in-law Mary C. and Patrick Carli of Saratoga Springs NY; siblings, and their spouses, Samuel and Marianne Chalk of Chesapeake VA, Ann and Cliff Jacobs of Elmira, Frank and Connie Chalk of Hanover PA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Joan Mandell of Elmira; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Rosalee was a 1956 graduate of Elmira Free Academy. She worked for a short time at the Elmira Correctional Facility. Danny surprised Rosalee when in 1972 he bought LaFrance Grill on Erie Street in Elmira, and that is when her work really began. The bar became Mandell’s Tavern and later Mandell’s Restaurant. Rosalee and Danny worked side by side at the restaurant, serving the Elmira community, until their retirement in 2007. The years spent working together were quite an adventure! Over the years Rosalee enjoyed playing golf, telling her son she was the worst golfer in Elmira, but really loved the game! Rosalee enjoyed traveling, whether it was a trip to Hawaii, or annual trips to Shadowbrook PA to play golf.
