Obituary of Alta Irene Conkrite

Age 97 of Cayuta, NY passed away peacefully in Springwater, NY on Saturday, May 27, 2023.   Alta was born in Indiana, PA a daughter of Adam Mikesell Wilson and Alta Irene (Brown) Wilson.  She was predeceased by her husband Mark E. Conkrite, sister M. Lucile Lewis and granddaughter Theresa Conkrite.  Alta is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David A. and Linda Conkrite of Bridgeport NY; daughter Joy J. Bates of Elmira; daughter and son-in-law Patricia A. and Anthony Messina of Springwater NY; grandchildren, Karina (Emrys Juniper) Conkrite, Sean (Jennifer) Conkrite, Timothy Conkrite, Melissa (Dennis) Winningstad, April (Justin) McInerny; 6 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, niece Connie (Kurt) Kunze, nephew Kevin (Lisa) Ames.

Irene graduated from Horseheads High School at age 16 in order to work at the Eclipse factory to assist her family during WWII. She worked as an election inspector for 50 years for the Town of Veteran. She also volunteered at the Peterson Memorial Library in Odessa, NY for many years. She was an excellent seamstress, making wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses for her daughters’ weddings. She also loved to crochet and knit. She loved to make quilts. She was an avid Scrabble player and loved to read. 

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Monday, June 5, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  A funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m.  A livestream of the service will be available on YouTube, please subscribe to McInerny Funeral Home. Committal prayers and interment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads.  A reception will follow at the Hibernian Clubhouse, 701 Kinyon Street, Elmira.
