I worked with John at WENY for just a short while from 1978-1980. It was my first job in broadcast TV and his influence and friendship were always remembered fondly as my career evolved. Now retired, of the hundreds I have worked with through the years, I have forgotten more than I remember, but never John. One of a kind - unforgettable. My condolences to Mark, Mike and Jennifer and all others saddened by his passing.

John and I battled each other, rattled each other, and always made up and helped each other grow as we worked our way through the early days of WENY-TV. At the time, he directed our newscasts for which I anchored and reported, trying as much as possible to stretch the limits of our young station. We always made it work...until the flood of 1972, when the water took out our studios on the first floor of the Mark Twain--and nothing worked!
He was a multi-talented and very insightful partner and mentor...and I was thrilled to catch up with him years ago when we returned to the area.
May he rest in peace and may the family be proud of his accomplishments and his spirit.

I always appreciated John's friendship, advice and support while we worked together at WENY, WETM and beyond. We shared a lot of laughs during those years and he was a calming influence in what can be a tense business at times. My condolences to his family and friends.

My deepest sympathies to John's family for your loss. I can still see his mischievous smile in my mind's eye, hear his distinct voice, and the sound of his unforgettable laugh.
John always supported me, and I always checked in on him...for the last 20 plus years, after working with him in news as a TV news reporter/anchor.
We shared a mutual respect, which didn't come easy, and was most definitely earned.
I was offered an extraordinary position in London, England. Before I left the country, John was happy to stand as one of my references for employment to the UK government. I was surprised when he said; "You were one of the best and most talented journalists I ever had the pleasure of working with," and shared that he was really disappointed I intended to leave the news business.
We stayed in touch for decades, and I was genuinely saddened to hear of his passing. John's memory will always be alive in my heart. And he always promised me one day, he would share the secret recipe of his spaghetti sauce. If anyone would like to share it, I would be happy to make it...in John's honor, because he always kept everyone happy at the dinner table. Tiffany Ganz

I met John after graduation from college. He had a soft spot in his heart for Elmira natives. His call came too late, as I had already secured a position at a uhf in New Jersey. I remember John’s sincerity in helping me to find not just a job, but a career. I was blessed to spend 33 years in television production in NJ that I loved. I am thankful to John for his kindness and consideration.
