"Dick"
Elmira: Age 73, passed away, with his loving family by his side, on Monday, February 28, 2011 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dick was born May 1, 1937, a son of the late James J. and Adelaide (Brewer) Dalton. He is also predeceased by his brother Larry. Surviving Dick are his wife of 54 years, Marilyn Wheeler Dalton; children, with their spouses, Mary Ellen and Dale Allington of Elmira, Richard L. and Jonell Dalton of Las Vegas, NV, Kathryn A. and Luis Vizuette of Bellevue, NE, Betsy M. and Dominic Romeo of Elmira; beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Allington, Dylan Caraballo, Julia Rose Dalton, Zack and Nick Hendrix and Dominic Angelo Romeo. Also surviving are sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy A. and Edward Earley of Elmira; and several nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Elmira, Dick graduated from Elmira Free Academy and continued his education at Corning Community College. He served his country in the U.S. Army. A long time employee of the U.S. Postal Service, Dick retired after 32 years of service, 8 of those years serving as the Postmaster in Elmira. Proud of his Irish heritage Dick was a long time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Msgr. John J. Lee Division. He was also active in the American Legion, Post #0660 of Wayne, NY, Sons of Legionnaires, Dads of Foreign Service Veterans, Elks Lodge #62, former member of the Nat'l Assoc of Postmasters, Nat'l Assoc. of Postal Supervisors, Eagles Club, Loyal Order of Moose, Knights of Columbus, Elmira Baseball Umpire Assoc., American Red Cross Nat'l Disaster, Ombudsman for Office of the Aging, and volunteer with the American Cancer Society. In earlier years Dick coached CYO basketball at St. Cecelia's, and when his children were growing up he coached their Mark Twain Little League and Cinderella Softball teams. Dick was also a long time communicant of St. Mary's, Elmira. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Dick will be forever loved and missed. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Sts., on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Officers and member of the Elmira Elks Lodge #62 will meet at McInerny Funeral Home, Thursday at 6:35 p.m. to conduct a service for our brother, Dick.
