Horseheads: Age 85, formerly of Elmira, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving children, on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. Vin was born January 17, 1926 in Clifton Springs, NY, a son of Timothy E. and Helena (Doland) Maney. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Joan Palmer Maney, brothers, Paul and Hugh Maney, sister Hilda Miller. Vin is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lynn M. and Joseph Cascio of Elmira; son Timothy P. Maney of Elmira; grandchildren, J.J. (Vanessa) Cascio of Boulder CO, Cara L. (Justin) Meyer of Plattsburgh NY; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Mia and Giovanna Cascio, Simon and Luca Meyer; sister Joyce Psyher; sister-in-law Charlotte Robinson; nieces and nephews, Margaret Miller (Skip) Papanikolas, Mary (Roy) Laughlin, Paul (Dianne) Miller, Debbie (Wally) Richie, Colleen (John) Ciambriello, Steven (Leslie) Maney, Linda, John, Keith Psyher, Jane (Tony) Garcia, Kathy (Kevin) Murphy, Susan (Dale) Little, David (Sue) Palmer, Rebecca (Dennis) Vegard, G. Richard (Janice) Saltsman, John (Doreen) Saltsman. Vin was a Southside High School graduate. A proud U S Navy veteran of WWII, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. Vin sustained a hip and leg wound as the result of his ship being sunk by a Kamikaze pilot during the invasion of Okinawa. After the ship was sunk, Vin spent the night in shark infested waters before he and the rest of the surviving crew were rescued. After his military service Vin started his State Corrections career in Wallkill NY as a Mounted Correction Officer, ultimately retiring from the Elmira Correctional Facility in 1982 after 30 years of service. During his years at "The Hill" he was a Training Officer and was also active with the union. Vin also kept busy with part time jobs….he drove a delivery truck for Charlie Chips, worked for a sign company, and was a gifted mechanic, who loved to take apart and rebuild car and motorcycle engines. Vin also built radio controlled model airplanes. A gifted artist he enjoyed doing art work for family and friends. An avid outdoorsman Vin belonged to Ruffed Grouse Society and was a member, and former board member, of Fur, Fin and Feather. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Sts., on Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Military honors will be held outside the church immediately following the mass.
