Jean Spahr Segatto
Elmira: Age 80, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Bethany Manor. Jean was born in Long Island, NY, the daughter of Walter E. and Beulah (Lowry) Spahr. She attended Sewanhaka High School and during those years she took private art and piano lessons. Her husband Dr. Peter R. Segatto, and brother Kenneth Spahr predeceased her. Jean is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia J. and Dale Ramich of Elmira, Linda S. and John Ritter of Westminster MD, Helen S. and Christopher Castle of Fairfax VA; grandchildren, Brian J. Ramich and Sophia J. Castle; sister Carol Bogdasarian of Sarasota FL; along with several nieces and nephews. Jean was a 1953 graduate of Adelphi University starting as an art major, but shifting to Biology in her second year, where she met her husband Peter in their Organic Chemistry Laboratory. Jean and Peter raised their three daughters on W. Water Street. For the past four years she had lived at Woodbrook in Elmira. An accomplished pianist and artist Jean shared her talents with all. She was the organist at Our Lady of Lourdes Church for 10 years, and while living at Woodbrook was the resident artist, crafting greeting cards and brightening the walls with her paintings. While she loved music and her art, Jean's greatest love was her family, and she was completely devoted to them.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Streets, on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. Donations in Jean's memory may be directed to: Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 E. Corning Rd., Corning NY 14830 or Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601. Jean's daughters are grateful to the Skilled 2 Nursing Unit at Bethany Manor for the wonderful care their mom received.
