Obituary of Martin Thomas Kain

Age 90, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018. Marty was born in Elmira a son of Martin Henry and Anna McCormack Kain. He is predeceased by his grandsons, Kevin Austin and John Kain; sisters, Mary Margaret Meriwether and Anne Jones. Marty is survived by his wife of 65 years: Alice May Kain, children and their families: Sheila M. and David Austin of Horseheads with children, Brian (Erin) Austin and Andrea (Francis) Palumbo; Diane L. and Jeffery Grant of Weedsport NY with children, Patrick (Heather), Phillip and Erin (Josh Mashaw); James A. and Jane Kain of Horseheads with children, Michelle (Matthew) Jaworski and Ryan (Jenny); Carolyn A. and John Davies of Horseheads with children, Michelle (Jack) Wright and Lori Davies; Lori E. Kain of Gulf Breeze FL, great-grandchildren: Kali Grant, Kevin and Connor Austin, Jackson, Adrian and Adeline Palumbo, Khloe Wright, Genevieve Mashaw, Maxwell Jaworski and Emma Kain, sister: Florence Tammaro of Corning, sister-in-law: Ruth Carrigan of Owego, along with several nieces and nephews. Marty was a 1947 graduate of Elmira Free Academy where he was an exceptional football player. After his graduation Marty enlisted in the US Air Force, serving for four years. He worked for Verizon, retiring after 44 years of service. Recognizing Marty's football talent he was elected into the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame. Over the years he served as a member of the Hall of Fame Committee. Marty was active in county government where he was a Civil Service Commissioner, Watershed Coordinator, Solid Waste Disposal District Administrative board member and an Election Commissioner. He also found time to volunteer at Riverside School's health office, where his daughter is a nurse. Marty spent many hours with family and friends boating on Keuka Lake. Marty was a member of the Elmira Elks Lodge #62, Elmira Heights American Legion Post #154, the Pioneers of America and a life long communicant of St. Patrick's Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Marty with a donation to a charity of their choice.
