Obituary of Katherine L. Castellino

Age 86, wife of 45 years to the late Samuel J. Castellino passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at Edlerwood Assisted Living, Waverly NY. Born September 10, 1931 in Elmira, Katherine was the daughter of the late Katherine Stapleton and Harry J Lagonegro. Survived by her five children; Claire (Radames) Perez of Dryden, NY, Joseph Castellino of Elmira, William (Patty) Castellino of Grand Island NY, Roseanne (Steve) Bravman of Dedham, MA and Samuel D Castellino of Elmira. Grandmother to Samuel, Matthew and Nicholas. Katherine is also survived by sisters-in-law, Margaret Lagonegro of Elmira, Kathy Lagonegro of Texas, Claire M. Castellino of Elmira; and many nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to her husband, Katherine was predeceased by her brothers: Dr. J. Harry Lagonegro, Edward T. Lagonegro, Thomas Lagonegro, Robert Lagonegro and William Lagonegro. Katherine graduated from Elmira Free Academy and Cornell University where she received a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. After working for New York City Hospital for several years, she returned to Elmira and worked at the Chemung County Probation Department. In 1960, she married Sam Castellino. Together they raised their children and built a life enriched by family and many friends. Katherine's life was a busy one...She took time away from work to raise her children, returning in the 1970s to the Chemung County Health Department. Katherine then transitioned to work for Southern Tier Hospice from where she retired. After retirement, she was an active volunteer at the Chemung County Nursing Facility and the Elmira Community Kitchen. Providing care for the sick and those in need was always important to Katherine. Among other things, she will be remembered for her love of quilting, piano playing, Keuka Lake and her daily 2-mile walks. She will also be remembered for her famous words: "move it or lose it" and "be good, and if you can't be good, be careful". There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Katherine on Saturday, July 21, 2018, 10:00 a.m., in St Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. In lieu of flowers, donations in Katherine's memory may be directed to CareFirst, 3805 Meads Creek Road, Painted Post NY 14870-9509, Arctic League, P O Box 113, Elmira NY 14902 or the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue, Elmira NY 14903.
