Edward J. Hughes
Elmira: Age 91, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital, in the love of his family who were by his side. Ed was born November 14, 1920, in Elmira, the son of Edward F. and Alice (Aldous) Hughes. He is predeceased by his brothers and sisters, James "Stub" (Dorothy) Hughes, Margaret (Fred) Brooker, Henry (Irene) Hughes, Robert (Ann) Hughes, Francis (Mary) Hughes, John "Jackie" Hughes,and Alice Rita Johnson, son-in-law Steven Wasielewski. Ed is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Fischer Hughes; children, with their spouses, John E. and Grace Hughes, and children Edward (Linda), Karen (Jeremy) Wheadon, and Kathleen Hughes; Elizabeth A. Dayne; Jean Marie Hughes, and sons, Shawn and Randy Applin; Susan E. and Kenneth Frazee, Charlori, PA, and children Adam (Angie), and Sarah (Jason) Sauers; Patricia A. and Thomas Corcoran; Mary Ellen Wasielewski, Medway, MA and sons, Ryan, Peter and Jared; and Margaret A. and Lynn Morseman, and daughter Chelsea; close family friend Ronald Gonzales; 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Kennedy, Horseheads, Sr. Elizabeth Hughes, RSM, Rochester; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Arndt, Albion, NY, Margaret and Emory Bennett, Elmira, Carl Johnson, San Antonio, TX. Ed was a decorated WWII Army veteran. Serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater, he received a Bronze Battle Star and the Purple Heart. Ed was retired from the U. S. Postal Service. A well known golfer and bowler in the area, Ed was a member of the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame. Most important to Ed was the cherished time spent with his family.
Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, on Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Committal prayers, with military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
