Obituary of John Barry Hinds, Jr.
"Jack"
Age 97, of Elmira, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on Friday, October 27, 2017, at Woodbrook. Jack was born in Malone NY a son of John Barry and Josephine (Allen) Hinds. He is predeceased by his sister Margaret Reisdorf. Jack is survived by his wife Winifred McCabe Hinds, with whom he celebrated 74 years of marriage in May; daughters, and their families, Jacqueline H. and D. Gregory Van Dussen of Batavia NY with children, Daniel J. (Ellen) Van Dussen of Boardman OH, and Michael J. (Barbara Szelest) Van Dussen of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Marcia H. and Paul Hertzog, with daughter Kathryn B. Hertzog, all of Elmira; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Maya, Cyril and Martin Van Dussen; brother George Allen Hinds of Chicago; along with several nieces and nephews. Jack was a veteran of World War II serving in the U S Army Air Corps. His career was spent working in the foundry business with the last thirty plus years as the owner and president of Ironcast in Troy PA. Jack and Winifred enjoyed their home on Greenridge Drive where they raised their family and lived for 57 years. He was a longtime communicant and active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He was also a long time member of the Elmira Country Club where he was able to perfect his skills in the game of golf. Jack was also an avid reader, bridge player, walker, and handyman who could fix almost anything. After his retirement Jack helped many people start new businesses through SCORE, a part of the Small Business Administration. He also took up painting and will be remembered for his hand painted Christmas cards. Jack had a lifelong love of aviation and enjoyed volunteering at the Wings of Eagles Museum in Big Flats. In their retirement years Jack and Winnie enjoyed spending winters in Florida and traveling. Jack's family will greet friends at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 161 High Street, Elmira, on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 from 9:15 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Jack's Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will follow at FOREST LAWN MEMORIAL PARK. Jack's family thanks the staff and residents at Woodbrook for the care and love provided to him for the last year and a half. Also to CareFirst for their care of Jack the past month that enabled him to stay at Woodbrook.
