Obituary of Peter J. Sheran

Age 72, passed away at the Bath VA Medical Center on Monday, November 10, 2014. Pete was born in Boston MA on April 2, 1942 the son of Peter L. and Winifred (Brodrick) Sheran. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gina M. and Jeff Stewart of Elmira and their children, Vincent M. Zukas, Jeffrey C. Stewart, Jr., Jared A.C. Stewart and Tricia (Tyler) Brockoff; sister Mary L. McGovern of Bradenton FL. Pete had a 26 year career with the U.S. military. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. While with the Marines he served at Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban missile crisis. He later served two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also stationed in Hawaii and served as an extra in the making of the movie Tora, Tora, Tora. After his years with the Marine Corps, Pete took a short break from the military life before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served for a number of years both active and active reserve duty. Pete retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1986. He was a member of the Elmira Elks Club, and the John J. Lee Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians where he was currently serving as Board President before resigning due to declining health. He was a faithful member of the AOH Wednesday night Euchre League. He also enjoyed bowling and golf. Pete was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Family and friends are invited to call at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira on Sunday, November 16, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m., St. Mary's Church. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Donations in Pete's memory may be directed to Holy Family Catholic School, 421 Fulton Street, Elmira NY 14904.
The officers and members of the Elmira AOH will meet at the McInerny Funeral Home on Sunday, November 16th, at 6:00 p.m. to conduct a prayer service for our brother Pete. Signed, Jim Palmer, President
